About the event

"Larry is a well informed & passionate winemaker with a point of view - which, as simple as that sounds, is a rarity. His winemaking perspective is heavily influenced by the theoretical nature of his education (MS from the esteemed UC Davis' Viticulture and Enology) as well as the methodologies employed by greats before him. The man has the ability to seamlessly talk through Burgundian Pinot clones and at the same time explain the winemaking process in plain English." - Naushad Huda

Though Tercero's main concentration is working with Rhone varieties, Larry remains curious and therefore also works with Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, Cabernet Franc, and a few other fun and interesting grapes.

Winemaker Larry Schaffer is coming down from Santa Barbara to tell stories and taste us through 5 of his prized, diverse, micro-production wines.

THE WINES

2021 Trilogia

Starting the party right!  This is a blend of 60% Grenache Blanc, 24% Clairette Blanche and 16% Gewurztraminer (and this Gewurztraminer was stomped by Larry, left on the skins overnight and then pressed). It's slightly floral, has great texture and finishes with refreshing acidity.

2021 Nouveau Cinsault (carbonic Cinsault served chilled)

Only 100 cases made (only 2 bottles left at Hi-Times!). Letting the geeky winemaker out of the bottle on this one! The grapes from the historic Zaca Mesa Vineyard were picked in late October, pitch-forked into a tank, the tank was then filled with CO2 and closed up tight - and Larry Schaffer did nothing for 5 weeks! During that time, fermentation took place INSIDE the unbroken berries rather than those berries being crushed and the juice being in contact with the skins. The wine is bright and fresh with slight effervescence.

2018 Cinsault

Light i n color and texture but ethereal in both mouthfeel and aromatic complexity. 100% whole cluster; aged in older oak for 18 months; only 12% alcohol.

2021 Pinot Noir - Kessler Haak Vineyards

Now we're getting geeky! This is a blend of 4 different Pinot Noir clones - 114, 115, Pommard and 777. Each was brought in separately, foot stomped by Larry, fermented 100% whole cluster, pressed and then aged for nearly 18 months in older oak. Showy young, this wine will age gracefully and with layers and layers of aromatics and texture.

2015 Grenache Larner Vineyard

The grapes from this esteemed vineyard were hand picked, fermented with their stems, pressed and then aged in older French oak barrels for 40 months, unracked until just before bottling. A powerful Grenache that still exhibits the finesse this vineyard is known for.
